The Museum of Death houses artifacts devoted to the dearly and not-so-dearly departed. Founded in June of 1995 by JD Healy and Cathee Shultz, the museum showcases the largest collection of artwork by serial killers, including self-portraits of John Wayne Gacy clad in his clown costume. (Postcards of his paintings are sold in the museum gift shop!) In addition to featuring graphic crime scene and car crash photos, the museum houses cult regalia from the likes of the Manson Family, the Peoples Temple, and Heaven’s Gate. Funeral parlor paraphernalia of assorted caskets and embalming devices are also on display as is an authentic shrunken head. And if that doesn’t get your head rolling, surely the sight of serial killer Henri Désiré Landru’s will; the “Bluebeard” of Paris’ severed skull is on full view. Death masks, an electric chair, and a guillotine, along with detailed profiles of notorious death row inmates, such as Richard “The Nightstalker” Ramírez and Ted Bundy, round out the artifacts of execution. But, humans aren’t the only animals visited by the Grim Reaper. The “Specimen Room” comprises a variety of taxidermy, including movie star Jayne Mansfield’s pet Chihuahua who died alongside her in a car accident. The Museum of Death certainly entices the morbid inquisitors, yet this haunt is entirely didactic, complete with historic relics and death-dealing videos, all with an underlying theme of how to preserve life.
